The Russian Chamber Music Foundation of Seattle announces the second annual Russian Piano Festival/Competition. Following the successful first year in 2008, this year’s Festival/Competition will be even bigger and expanded with some exciting changes. A new group (E) - Concerto - is being added and the winners of this category will have an opportunity to audition with Maestro Gerard Schwarz for a chance to play with the Seattle Symphony. Winners of all groups (A,B,C,D,E) will receive trophies. Special prizes (medals) have been added for the best performance of: Prokofiev Sonata, Rachmaninov Etudes-tableaux, Tchaikovsky “Seasons,” and Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues, op.87.

Date: Saturday, December 5, 2009
Registration Deadline: November 5, 2009
Location: Sherman Clay Piano Store, Downtown Seattle
Eligibility: Age 6 through College and Adults

This event has been created to expose piano students to the vast repertoire of Russian piano literature and gives students (age 6 through college and adults) the opportunity to perform before a judge, compete with other students, and challenge their skills for further musical growth.  The entire experience is open to the public so competing students will also have a chance to perform before an audience.

The 2009 Russian Piano Festival/Competition is divided into five groups (A, B, C, D, E) based on ability level per the repertoire. The required repertoire includes many composers and various levels of difficulty.  All pieces will be performed by memory.  Students may select their own editions and must present the edition they are using for the judge (with numbered measures).  All pieces should be played without repeats.  Teachers should be responsible for their student’s quality of preparation.

There will be three winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd place) from each group. The first place winners from each group will have a chance to perform at one of the Russian Chamber Music Foundation of Seattle fundraising events in 2010.  The adjudicator will also choose three students from each group who deserve Honorable Mention awards.
